Through the study of art, art history, critical analysis, materials, techniques and contemporary art, we encourage you to create meaning, understand multiple perspectives, draw on different academic disciplines and discover the complexity of creativity.
Our former students enter working life with knowledge and skills in creative and critical thinking that are put to use in a wide range of professional careers in addition to the traditional art field: Writers, teachers, designers or self-employment. We are proud of the creative success of our former students.
The school’s educational program is based on an interdisciplinary structure. The aim is to develop the students’ creative qualities within the various arts, as well as teach the students to express themselves creatively.
The education aims to form the basis for one’s own creative and artistic activities, and to prepare the student to start their own professional career as a working artist or to apply for further education at colleges/universities within art, arts and crafts, design and teacher training.
Independent thinking is a primary goal of the teaching at DTK. There is a focus on individual participation, direct experience and understanding of the artistic process. Art and craft are brought together, with problem solving for a modern society as a goal.
DTK is a member of the Forum for Art Education. In addition, DTK has an exchange program with the art college ESAD in Portugal and SanTelmo college of art in Malaga, Spain. We have also exchange protocols with instituitions such as Rama, Bienal de Cerveira and Fundação D. Luís.
The students’ creative qualities are developed through an interdisciplinary approach. The ultimate goal is to give the students an individual and creative expression.
Areas such as photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and related assignments are part of the basic study plan for all students.
Related subject areas, such as philosophy, psychology, anthropology etc, are taught by guest lecturers, the school’s teaching staff, or in the form of seminars where guest teachers or lecturers with specialist expertise are invited.
Visits to museums, galleries, artists’ studios and other relevant events are arranged in connection with the teaching.

DTK is approved as a two-year art school (kunstfagskole). This means that an art education with us is vocational and provides competence that can be used in working life without further training. Students have the option of a third in-depth year.
Each study year provides 60 study credits. The completed two-year vocational school studies at DTK School of Applied Arts gives 120 credits and general study skills.
DTK provides a progressive education that emphasizes personal experience more than delivered knowledge. Seeing, touching and critical evaluation are the backbone of DTK’s educational method.
The part time study is based on the same educational guidelines as the full-time study, with a more flexible timetable.
The part time study lasts 4 years. Students get access to their own studio space, which they can also use outside of teaching days.
The evening school is based on the same educational guidelines as the full time and part time study. The evening school offers interdisciplinary art studies for both beginners and advanced students. It is well suited for those who have daytime work or studies, and those in the starting pit for their art education.
For beginners, the Evening School offers thorough preparation for further art education, and for advanced students it provides an opportunity for increased inspiration in a group where creativity is a strong driving force.
The main aim of this advanced school year is to facilitate the students’ professional life within the arts.
Anyone with an interest in art is most welcome to apply for a study place with us. In the admission process we value seriousness, motivation and willingness to work hard are desirable.
Candidates are assessed on the basis of an application form, an admission test and an oral interview. If you have previous experience with art, we are happy to accept individual portfolios. The school reserves the right to reject applications without further justification.
Admission to vocational school education is based on completed and passed upper secondary education, or equivalent prior experiential learning. In addition, all applicants must submit the admission test, which is to present 6-10 optional works carried out by themselves. Applicants who are 19 years of age or older in the year of admission, and who have not completed upper secondary education, can be assessed on the basis of practical skills and an admission test.
