Porto workshop March 2023

20th – 24th of March

Skolen arrangerer jevnlig studieturer til museer og gallerier både i Norge og utlandet.

The workshop in Porto will take place in the week 12: 20th to 24th March 2023

The students have to arrange their own flight to/from Porto and place to stay (hotel/airbnb, etc). We advise the students to order Europeisk helsetrygdkort på Helsenorge.

NOTE: This program is a work in progress, the week is decided but the dates and hours of each  workshop may be updated.

Program

Day 1 – monday 20th March

Day 2 – tuesday 21st March

10.00 | Meet at Aliados by the McDonald’s restaurant (Porto center) → maps

City-walk and Workshop (part 1) 

A central goal of the workshop “Illustration and Architecture” is to investigate the expanded field of illustration, in its intersection with other disciplines such as architecture. This workshop proposes new methods to conduct visual research while the participants explore the city of Porto as if they were a “flâneur”… Always seeking parallels and extrapolations between different forms of mapping, thinking and making. Therefore, the tour is planed as investigative framework for translations to illustration practice to exist.

Lunch pause and some time to yourself (ca. 2 hours)

Visit to the alternative art scene from Porto

City walk at the Art District Miguel Bombarda neighbourhood until ca. 17.00

Day 3 – wednesday 22nd March

City walk and workshop (part 2) 

12.30 | Meet at Aliados by the McDonald’s restaurant (Porto center) [link maps] – We take private bus to São João da Madeira: Old Factories and Art

14.00 | Visit to Fábrica Viarco – Visit to Viarco pencil factories and talk about on the old manufacturing processes

16.00 | Visit to The Oliva Art Centre (Núcleo de Arte da Oliva) and talk with the artistic director Andreia Magalhães on the permanent colections from Treger/Saint Silvestre – Art Brut and Norlinda e José Silva – Contemporary Art.

We take the private bus back to Porto together.

Day 4 – thursday 23rd March

Full day workshop with Goncalo Pena and Marisa FerreiraCentro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (meet director Marta Mestre)

10.00 | Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães. (meet director Marta Mestre). Guided visit of art center (CIAJG).

Lunch pause

15.00 | Art work presentation by artist Marisa Ferreira (art center-CIAJG)

You can spend the rest of afternoon in Guimaraes (sugestions at the end of document) or return to Porto (choose your own transport: taxi / uber, train or bus):

Day 5 – friday 24th March

Serralves Museum and gardens guided visit (ca. 1,5 hours)

Materials

List of suggested materials (suggestions only, no need to buy everything on the list)

  • Sketch Book + ou – A5 ou A4, without rings.
  • 6 or more sheets of white paper cut to the same size as the sketch book.
  • Watercolors.
  • Round brushes between sizes 6 to 12 or water brushes (ideally).
  • Wide flat brush.
  • Ecolines (pen) 3 different colors, light, medium, and a very dark blue or black. • Fine black waterproof pen + or – 0.8.
  • Graphite pencil 6B.
  • Charcoal pencil.
